The above is one of the reasons that I expected today's run to be a bit of a downer. I'm glad Mica was doing speed work today because I figured today's run was going to be epic in terms of its level of failure. Last night is Top Chef night and involves me and my fellow compatriot in French Studies, Sarah H. We take turns buying pizza. Everything was going well until Bravo c**k-blocked my night with reruns. I was not informed that there would be reruns. Sarah and I figured it was a sign from the Almighty that I needed to get my homework done and get to bed. Besides being awfully full from all the pizza I ate, my computer kept freezing and thus dumping parts of my homework that I hadn't had a chance to save. I was supposed to upload my work by midnight. I was finally able to, at midnight, after throwing a hissy fit and sobbing.
When I woke up at 6 AM, I didn't feel much like running. I was still full and super cranky. But I knew, after about two seconds, that there was no way I'd get my run in later that evening. My class ends at 5 PM, which makes it dark and even colder out. No. Way.
So I dragged myself out of bed, drank the rest of my water, watched some Miles and Trials, and then was out the door by 7 AM. I was supposed to do 5 miles, so I decided to follow part of my route for my 8 miler, and just do an out-and-back. I was feeling surprisingly good, but I knew that it was early and that things could change if I went out too fast. When I checked my watch at mile 1, I was surprised to see an average pace of 9:49. I figured it would fade or that Joanie Garmin was just acting up, but my pace stayed pretty consistent, despite stomach cramps (...forgot about the pizza) and a headwind the entire way home. Here are the splits:
Mile 1 - 9:49
Mile 2 - 9:51
Mile 3 - 9:48
Mile 4 - 9:47
Mile 5 - 10:07
Mile 0.11 - 10:28
The last mile was on snowy, slippery sidewalks because of amount of traffic that was out and about, so that's why those times are a bit slower. All in all, I covered 5.11 miles in 50:31.56. Not too shabby!
Tomorrow is supposed to be 5 or 6 miles, which I expect to be less than stellar given today's awesome run. Or it could be great. Either way, I'm getting my butt to bed much earlier.

yep- a little sleep works wonders!
Awesome run! Don't you feel great when it's unexpectedly good? It makes up for the other 80% when it's just "meh."
Ah, I have a confession to make. I skipped my speedwork in favor of sleeping. Oh, and going to the 8:30am meeting. Gross. I also realized that I had not had a day off from exercise in two weeks, so it seemed like a good idea. This all being said, I still am like, "AH! I skipped speedwork! I will be slow!"
I'm thinking about re-arranging my weekly running schedule in light of the Thursday morning meetings. I might do Tuesday speedwork too--especially since we both seem keen on the idea of staying safe and stable in the gym. I will probably find you later and talk your ear off about this...
I wrote so much because I think you understand my neuroses.
Sounds like it turned out to be a good run! Nice job!
