On the Road Again

Hello from Sunny Chicago!!! Okay, well today not so much. Today looks like this:

Yesterday, however, was a different story. Yesterday, I wore SHORTS on my AM run. Yesterday, we all saw the sun. It was a brief respite from the normally shitty February weather, and I think we all needed it. Today, despite the fog and rain, isn't too bad compared to a few weeks ago. It's in the 40's/50's right now and is supposed to drop a bit lower as the day goes on. Fine by me, really...as long as it stays above freezing, I don't care. It's February and the weather is supposed to be crappy EVERYWHERE dammit.

The only exciting thing I can think of right now, in terms of my running, is that my green Superfeet have magically made me a tad bit faster. It was probably a combination of the weather and the inserts, but yesterday I ran straight-up 9:30's for my morning run! For nearly 5 miles! Today was a bit slower, but still faster than I'd been running before at 10:00 per mile. I can't help but be a little excited about this, but I'm trying to keep that in check. In fact, my excitement has been tempered by recent string of Ouches.

Hip flexors: SORE.
Left knee: SORE.
Right knee: BRUISED (this may not be running-related, but I thought I'd include it).

And the pièce de résistance: the massive blister on my Right instep. This must be from my new inserts, and having run 6 fairly speedy miles with them on Sunday. This is a first in terms of blisters for me. I've never had a blister on my instep ever. In nearly 22 years of Irish dancing shoes, this blister has never appeared. For reals.

On Tuesday, Blister tore through my bandages exactly half-way through my run. Every step from then on was pretty painful. You know, there's pain you push through and then there's just silly pain that you really should stop and treat. This falls in the latter category, but I was still 23 minutes from home at that point, so I kept on running. By the time I began to de-robe for my shower, Blister had popped and bled through my sock, to my new green inserts. They are now Christmas-coloured. Of course, when I finally go in the shower, Blister, being open and on the bottom of my foot, came in contact with water. EXCRUCIATING PAIN in 3...2..1.... Thus I also served as my roommate's wake-up call. You're welcome.

I got heavy-duty sport bandages, but the same thing happened again today. I'm not planning on running tomorrow (part of the whole "take it easy coming off an injury" plan) so we'll see if the third time really IS the charm on Friday morning. The funny foot injury seems to be subsiding, but who the hell knows? I don't think it's a stress fracture anymore, but something is still off so I really, really want to be careful. I just can't afford the gym and miss running outside terribly, even in the crappiest of weather. So, please keep your fingers crossed.

I've been fairly lucky with blisters too. I've only ever gotten them when racing through rain. Hope it heals soon. Remember, you can disinfect it with Jameson in a pinch. If you place a small bowl under your foot to catch the run-off you can still drink it!

Good luck on Friday! Take care of that blister. Those can be pesky.

Yuck about the blister. I have been fairly lucky and haven't had to deal with them in the past too often, but they are super painful.

Have you tried moleskin?

Yikes! Blisters blow. I find taking pictures and showing them proudly to coworkers like pictures of children help to ease the pain.
